Hal was the manager of the First Bank of Forks, Frances was a teller whose chief joy in life was gathering and spreading gossip. Everything seemed perfectly normal and happy until one day Hal disappeared, along with a large sum of money. And the night clerk at the local Quik Shop convenience mart. Of course a round of gossip ensued, but Frances weathered the storm, held her head high and continued to raise Jessica on her own. Frances never dated after Hal left, although she did obtain a quiet divorce. But for some years now she has had an unrequired crush on Chief of Police Charlie Swan. Charlie denies that that is what it is, because, well, he tends to be oblivious that way. And he doesn't like thinking in those terms. Jessica is an average student who loves to talk to anyone who will listen. She, too, is very much into gossip and talking, and enjoys soap operas and coffeehouses and the like. She is considering going to the state university and perhaps studying journalism, because reporters have access to great amounts of information. But she is also interested in nursing, and thinks that hooking a doctor for a husband would be a great thing. Like any teenage girl, her feelings run hot and cold.
